Installing the CLI

The Paperclip CLI ships as a single binary, paperclipai. Use this page to get that binary on your machine, point it at an instance, and bring up a working local instance from a cold start. The shortest route from "nothing installed" to "a healthy server you can operate against" is two commands: paperclipai onboard to write a config, then paperclipai run to launch it.

If you already know Paperclip is going to live on this machine for a while, skip straight to the managed install — it is the version of the CLI you can update, roll back, and run as a background service.


Prerequisites

The CLI is a Node program. You need Node.js 20 or newer on PATH before anything else works.

That single requirement covers the common local install: paperclipai run can stand up an embedded PostgreSQL instance for you, so you do not need a separate database server to start. If you intend to point the CLI at your own PostgreSQL, have its connection string ready and the CLI will use it instead.


Getting the paperclipai binary

paperclipai is published to npm, so the fastest path needs no install at all — run it with npx:

That is the canonical way to start, and it always runs the latest published version. For a paperclipai command that persists, you have two choices: the managed install described in the next section, which is the one to prefer, or a plain global npm install:

The package exposes exactly one binary, paperclipai. Every example in this documentation is written in the form paperclipai <command>. If you have not installed it, prepend npx — running it through npx is equivalent to calling the installed binary directly.

Note: If you are working inside a clone of the Paperclip monorepo, use the in-repo development alias pnpm paperclipai <command> instead. It runs the same CLI straight from source via tsx, which is what you want while developing the CLI itself. The monorepo also documents npx paperclipai onboard --yes as the standard quickstart for a packaged install.


The managed install

npx is perfect for trying Paperclip out, but it is temporary — every run resolves whatever happens to be cached, and there is nothing to update or roll back. When you want Paperclip to stay, install it into the managed CLI store:

That one command downloads the latest published release, verifies it, and installs a paperclipai command into ~/.local/bin. From then on you type paperclipai directly, and you get three things npx cannot give you: one-command updates, instant rollback to the previous version, and the ability to run Paperclip as a background service.

The managed install needs Node.js 20 or newer, the same as the rest of the CLI.

What it puts on disk

A managed install keeps every version it has downloaded as its own self-contained payload, and points a symlink at whichever one is active. Nothing is installed system-wide, and nothing needs sudo — it all lives under your own home directory.

The manifest also remembers the two payloads you were on before, which is what makes paperclipai update --rollback instant. Payloads older than that are pruned on the next successful update.

If ~/.local/bin is not already on your PATH, install offers to add it to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc for you, inside a clearly marked block it knows how to remove again later. Decline the prompt (or use a different shell) and it prints the line to add yourself:

Choosing what to install

By default you get the latest stable release. Pass a flag to pick something else:

Flag Use
--canary Install the npm canary channel — newer features, rougher edges.
--version <version> Install an exact published npm version. It has to be a complete x.y.z version; latest and partial versions are rejected.
--ref <ref> Install a GitHub branch, tag, or commit SHA, built from source on your machine.
--repo <owner/name> Override the GitHub repository used with --ref (default paperclipai/paperclip). Requires --ref.
-y, --yes Consent to git-ref code execution and supported shell PATH updates without prompting. Use it in scripts and CI.

--canary and --version are mutually exclusive, and --ref cannot be combined with either — each install picks exactly one channel.

Warning: --ref downloads a repository at that commit and runs its dependency and build scripts on your machine. The CLI warns you and asks for confirmation before it fetches anything; in a non-interactive shell it refuses unless you pass --yes. Only point it at source you trust.

Whichever route you take, the CLI runs a smoke check on the new payload — it executes the installed binary and confirms it reports the version you asked for — before making it the active one. If that check fails, nothing is switched over.

Verify the result at any time:

Removing the managed install

paperclipai uninstall removes the managed CLI and leaves every piece of your data alone.

It takes no options. In order, it stops and removes the background service if one is installed, deletes the paperclipai command from ~/.local/bin, removes the PATH block it added to your ~/.bashrc and ~/.zshrc, and deletes the managed store at ~/.paperclip/cli.

Your companies, config, database, logs, and secrets all live elsewhere under ~/.paperclip and are untouched — reinstall later and you pick up exactly where you left off.

Note: If ~/.local/bin/paperclipai turns out not to be a Paperclip-managed shim (for example you replaced it by hand), uninstall leaves that file alone and tells you so rather than deleting someone else's command. It also refuses to run while services for other instances are still installed; uninstall those with paperclipai service uninstall --instance <id> first.


First run: bootstrap a local instance

Two commands take you from an empty machine to a running server.

paperclipai run

onboard writes the instance config; run validates it and starts the server. You can also let run do everything — if no config exists yet and you are in an interactive terminal, run calls onboarding for you before it boots.

onboard is the interactive first-run wizard. It writes a config file plus the local key material the server needs, then offers to start Paperclip immediately. Reach for it when you are setting up a new local install or rebuilding a config from guided prompts.

The first prompt asks you to choose a setup path:

Quickstart Local defaults that are ready to run: an embedded PostgreSQL database, local-disk file storage, and local encrypted secrets. This is the recommended path.
Advanced setup Step-by-step prompts for the database, LLM provider, logging, server binding, storage, and secrets. Use this when you need explicit control over any of those.

During onboarding the CLI also ensures the agent JWT secret (PAPERCLIP_AGENT_JWT_SECRET) and the local secrets key file exist, creating them if they are missing. On Advanced setup, if you supply a PostgreSQL connection string or an LLM API key, the wizard will test the connection and validate the key inline so you find problems before the server starts.

When it finishes, onboarding prints the resolved configuration and the next commands to run.

Flag Use
--yes, -y Accept Quickstart defaults non-interactively and start immediately. Without --bind, this forces trusted-local loopback defaults, ignoring any reachability env vars. Use it in scripts and CI.
--run Save the config, then start the server right away (equivalent to answering "yes" to the start prompt).
--bind <mode> Apply a reachability preset to the Quickstart server config. One of loopback, lan, or tailnet.
--install-service Install and start the background service after onboarding, without asking.
--no-install-service Do not install or suggest the background service.
--config <path>, -c Write the config to a specific path instead of the default instance config.
--data-dir <path>, -d Isolate all local Paperclip state away from ~/.paperclip — handy for clean test instances and worktrees.

In an interactive terminal, onboarding also asks whether you want to install Paperclip as a background service so it starts on login and keeps running after you close the terminal. Say yes and it installs and starts the service for you instead of running in the foreground. --install-service skips the question and does it; --no-install-service skips it and doesn't. Note: If Paperclip is already configured at the target path, rerunning onboard detects the existing install and keeps the current configuration unchanged. It still tops up the agent JWT secret and secrets key file if needed, then offers to start. To change settings on an existing install, use paperclipai configure rather than re-onboarding.


paperclipai run

run is the one-command path to a healthy local instance. It bootstraps and launches in sequence:

  1. Resolves the active instance and config path, and loads the instance env file.
  2. If no config exists and the terminal is interactive, hands off to onboarding first.
  3. Runs the doctor checks with repair enabled by default. If any check fails, it stops before starting the server.
  4. Starts the Paperclip server.

--force Run even when the same instance is active under the service manager.

--data-dir <path>, -d Isolate local state away from ~/.paperclip.

Tip: In a non-interactive environment (no TTY), run will not start onboarding for you. Run paperclipai onboard once first, then retry paperclipai run.

Note: If the same instance is already running as a background service, run stops with an error rather than starting a second copy on the same port. Check on the running one with paperclipai service status, or pass --force if you really do want a foreground process alongside it.

Warning: run (with no subcommand) is a local bootstrap command — it stands up a server on your machine. The run subcommands (run list, run live, run get, run events, run log, and the rest) are a different concept entirely: they inspect and control heartbeat runs through the API on an already-running instance. Do not confuse the two. See run for the subcommands.


What happens to your data

onboard and run write everything under a per-instance home directory. The default instance lives at ~/.paperclip, with the config, embedded database, logs, storage, and secrets key kept beneath it. Pass --data-dir <path> to relocate that root, or --instance <id> to keep multiple instances cleanly separated.

The CLI also handles two pieces of credential material during setup so you never wire them by hand: the agent JWT secret (stored in the instance env file as PAPERCLIP_AGENT_JWT_SECRET) and the local secrets master key file. Both are created on first onboarding and reused thereafter.


After the server is up

Bringing the server up does not yet give the CLI an authenticated identity to operate a company. Once run reports that Paperclip is listening, connect the CLI to the instance and pick a persona:

  • On a fresh interactive machine, run the connection wizard, which resolves the API base, health-checks it, logs you in as the board, mints a token, and saves a profile.
  • For headless and CI setups, mint a board token or an agent key and point the CLI at it explicitly.
